What Is Midnight? The Cardano Privacy Chain, Explained (2026)
Midnight is a privacy-focused blockchain built by the same engineers who built Cardano. It uses zero-knowledge proofs so an app can prove something is true (you are over 18, you paid, you own the token) without publishing the underlying data on-chain. Its token is NIGHT, which was launched as a Cardano native asset in December 2025; its fee resource is DUST; and its mainnet produced its first block on March 30, 2026 (checked September 5, 2026 on midnight.network).
How Midnight relates to Cardano
Midnight is a separate chain, not an upgrade to Cardano. Input Output built it, the Midnight Foundation runs it, and it is positioned as a "partner chain" that leans on Cardano in three places: the NIGHT token exists on Cardano as an ordinary native asset, Cardano holders received the largest slice of the initial NIGHT distribution, and Cardano's stake pool operators are the pool from which future Midnight validators are expected to come. Owning ADA does not give you NIGHT and never did; the two are different tokens on different ledgers.
NIGHT and DUST: the two-token idea
The design that makes Midnight different is that you do not spend the token to pay fees. NIGHT is an unshielded, transferable token that you hold. Holding it generates DUST, a shielded, non-transferable resource that pays for transactions and decays if you stop holding NIGHT. The Foundation's own numbers: one NIGHT generates up to 5 DUST, a fresh holding takes about a week to reach that cap, and an unspent balance decays back to zero over roughly a week once the NIGHT moves away. The point is that fees never expose your holdings and fee costs stay predictable, because you are not selling anything to pay them. We cover the token in detail in What is the NIGHT token?.
The launch so far (dated)
- August–October 2025: Glacier Drop, the claim window for the initial NIGHT distribution across eight chains. Cardano addresses were allotted 12 billion of the 24 billion supply.
- October–November 2025: Scavenger Mine, a second distribution for people who missed the drop.
- December 2025 ("Hilo"): NIGHT (minted on Cardano on November 25) transferred to claimants; trading and the first 25% redemption began.
- March 30, 2026 ("Kūkolu"): mainnet genesis with nine federated operators: Worldpay, Bullish, MoneyGram, Pairpoint by Vodafone, eToro, AlphaTON Capital, Google Cloud, Blockdaemon and Shielded Technologies. NIGHT was mirrored onto the Midnight ledger through a protocol mechanism that prevents duplication.
- Summer 2026: node 2.1 betas on preprod and mainnet, and the Sundae Labs Capacity Exchange, which lets a transaction's fee be settled in USDM instead of DUST.
The roadmap names two further phases: Mōhalu (a scaled testnet and the DUST capacity exchange) and Hua (hybrid apps that mix public and private state). Treat phase dates as intentions, not promises.
Why a meme-coin site is writing about a privacy chain
Because the questions land in our inbox. $CATSKY holders hold ADA, many of them looked at the Glacier Drop, and "is NIGHT on Cardano or Midnight?" has become a recurring question. The short answer: right now your NIGHT sits in your Cardano wallet as a native asset with policy ID 0691b2fecca1ac4f53cb6dfb00b7013e561d1f34403b957cbb5af1fa and the mirrored copy on Midnight follows it. If a site asks you to "migrate" NIGHT by sending it somewhere, close the tab. For the wallets that show it properly, see best wallet for Cardano tokens.
Nothing here is financial advice. Figures are dated because Cardano moves fast; re-check the linked source before you act on a number.

Frequently asked
Is Midnight part of Cardano?
It is a separate blockchain built by Input Output (the company behind Cardano) and run by the Midnight Foundation. It is a "partner chain": its NIGHT token was issued as a Cardano native asset, its first mainnet operators are federated, and it is designed to work alongside Cardano rather than replace it. Holding ADA does not give you NIGHT.
When did Midnight mainnet launch?
The Midnight mainnet produced its genesis block on March 30, 2026 (some outlets report March 31 because of time zones). It launched in a federated form, with nine named node operators, and the Foundation has said it intends to decentralise from there.
Do I need NIGHT to use Midnight?
To send transactions you need DUST, and DUST is generated by holding NIGHT. But NIGHT can be pointed at any address, so an app or a sponsor can generate DUST for you. In practice most users will either hold a little NIGHT or use apps that cover fees for them.
What can I build or do on Midnight today?
As of September 2026 the network is live with smart contracts written in Compact, a Sundae Labs "capacity exchange" that lets fees be paid in the USDM stablecoin instead of DUST, and early dApps such as a perpetuals exchange. It is still early: expect a small app catalogue and frequent node upgrades.
